Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout star John Boyega is set to take on another franchise, with the actor signed on for the lead role in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monster pic, Pacific Rim.
Boyega will play the son of the marshal played by Idris Elba in the original, according to Deadline. It’s unconfirmed whether Elba will be returning to the franchise, which grossed $411m at the box office.
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox,” Del Toro said in a statement. “The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
As previously reported, Del Toro will not be directing or writing the second installment. He will, however, serve as a producer. On board as director is Steven S DeKnight, creator of the Starz series Spartacus, who will be making his feature directorial debut. He’s also written and directed for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse, and Smallville.
The Pacific Rim sequel has had a rocky road to production. It was first announced by Legendary Pictures and Universal in 2014, with Del Toro attached to direct, and a summer 2017 release date locked down. The two studios removed it from the calendar the following September, before resurrecting the project in February, with DeKnight at the helm.
Del Toro was initially supposed to follow up last year’s Crimson Peak with Pacific Rim 2, but is now reportedly focused on developing a new version of Fantastic Voyage, based on the 1966 original. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scribe David Goyer is writing the screenplay.
As for Boyega, he’s currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII, and will next be seen onscreen opposite Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in The Circle. He’ll be making his stage debut on London’s West End in Woyzeck at the Old Vic, next year.
