The Navy confirmed that a Blue Angels F/A-18 jet has crashed in Tennessee, and the condition of the pilot is unknown.
The crash happened today as the Navy’s elite air performance team was preparing for the Great Tennessee Air Show this weekend in Smyrna.
The accident happened just after 3 p.m. local time in Tennessee, the advertised time for the Blues to start practice, according to the team’s Twitter feed.
A statement released at 3 p.m. by the Naval Air Forces command in Coronado said that name of the pilot is “being withheld pending next-of-kin notification requirements.”
Search and rescue crews were still combing the crash area two hours later, said Cmdr. Jeannie Groeneveld of the command in Coronado.
Fire officials in Tennessee have confirmed that one person is dead in the crash, according to local news reports. A plume of dark smoke can be seen in amateur videos and photos from the site.
