The Chicago White Sox have traded for starting pitcher James Shields, sending the San Diego Padres starter Erik Johnson and minor league shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
The White Sox welcomed Shields in a tweet Saturday.
Shields signed the largest free-agent contract in Padres history in February 2015 and had $65 million left on his deal entering the season. He is under contract through 2018, along with a team option at $16 million for 2019, but can opt out of his contract after this season. The 34-year-old Shields has a 2-7 record and a 4.28 ERA in 2016.
Chicago also received cash considerations in the trade.
Johnson is 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA and has not pitched for the White Sox since May 23. Tatis is the son of former major leaguer Fernando Tatis.
The White Sox (29-26) are 1½ games behind the Kansas City Royals for first place in the American League Central. Meanwhile, the Padres have floundered to a 22-34 mark and sit in last in the National League West.
