France has swept into a 4-0 lead against Iceland in their quarterfinal match at the Stade de France.
Olivier Giroud gave the host the lead in the 12th minute with a low left foot shot from inside the penalty area after running onto a pass over the top of the Iceland defense from midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Paul Pogba doubled the score line in the 20th minute after heading in a corner from Antoine Griezmann. Dimitri Payet drilled a low left shot into the corner of the net in the 43rd and Griezmann chipped — also with his left foot — the Iceland goalkeeper to score in the final minute of the half.
France is now well on the way to meeting Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Marseille.

Center half Samuel Umtiti will make his France debut against Iceland in the European Championship quarterfinal.
The 22-year-old Lyon defender is one of two enforced changes made by France coach Didier Deschamps to his starting line-up.
With center half Adil Rami and midfielder N'Golo Kante both suspended, Deschamps drafted Umtiti into the center of defense alongside Laurent Koscielny, while Moussa Sissoko takes Kante's place in midfield.
Sissoko wins his 42nd cap and will line up on the right of midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation. He was preferred to Yohan Cabaye, who many observers had expected to start.
Iceland is unchanged from the team that shocked England 2-1 in the round of 16.
It has fielded the same lineup in every game, sticking to a favored 4-4-2 formation with Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson as the two strikers.

Police carried out a controlled explosion to open the door of a car parked near the Stade de France, about three and a half hours before the stadium was due to host France's quarterfinal match against Iceland.
Police said the car was parked in an area where it shouldn't have been.
Security has been tight throughout Euro 2016 and particularly at the Stade de France, which was targeted by suicide bombers during the attacks across the Paris area on Nov. 13, 2015 that killed 130 people.

Germany striker Mario Gomez has been ruled out of the rest of Euro 2016 with a muscle tear in his right thigh.
The German football federation (DFB) says Gomez' participation in the semifinal against France or Iceland and a potential final is "out of the question."
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira are also both doubtful for Thursday's semifinal in Marseille with a knee injury and groin injury, respectively.
The DFB says an MRI scan in Annecy on Sunday revealed Schweinsteiger had a ligament strain in his right knee after receiving a knock in Saturday's quarterfinal against Italy, while Khedira has a left adductor injury.
Germany will play either France or Iceland in the semifinal.

UEFA expects a global television audience of around 150 million viewers for the France-Iceland quarterfinal.
UEFA Events marketing director Guy-Laurent Epstein says the worldwide appeal of Iceland's feel-good story means a higher than average TV rating is expected.
Epstein says each of the 45 match-slots at Euro 2016 should have an average audience of at least 120 million viewers — about the same as the global average audience of the Super Bowl.
UEFA expected an audience of around 200 million for the France-Romania opening match on June 10, and estimates an average audience of up to 300 million for the final next Sunday.
Epstein says UEFA aims to stage "51 Super Bowls in a month."

The heads of state and prime ministers from France and Iceland are to attend the European Championship quarterfinal between their countries on Sunday.
French president Francois Hollande has been a regular guest wearing his Les Bleus scarf at Euro 2016 matches. Prime Minister Manuel Valls will lead a delegation of French lawmakers among the VIP guests at Stade de France, according to UEFA.
Iceland has been sending around 10 percent of its 330,000 population to France for matches.
The island nation's outgoing president, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, and interim prime minister, Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson, are scheduled to attend the biggest game in the national team's history.

Police say a few dozen people were slightly injured in the Paris Euro 2016 fan zone when a fight among British fans prompted a rush for safety.
It was the first such incident in the Paris fan zone since the tournament started June 10, and comes amid tensions and high security across the country. France is under a state of emergency after extremist attacks last year, and hooligan violence that marred the early days of the tournament.
Paris police and city hall officials said Sunday that a group of fans started fighting during extra time in Saturday's quarterfinal between Germany and Italy. People near the fighting fans moved away, while scores of others ran for the exits, the officials said.
One person was hospitalized with injuries but should be released Sunday, while the others were treated on site at the fan zone beneath the Eiffel Tower, said a city hall official.
The incident lasted barely four minutes and no arrests were made, said the police official. Both officials were not authorized to be named according to government policy.
